Wogan’s Perfect Recall, Channel 4

Did we like it?
Another mainstream, braindead daytime filler from the once-radical, once-watchable Channel 4.

What was good about it?
• If you love purple, the set is a sensation.

What was bad about it?
• The slow, unexciting format in which contestants answer 20 questions – and then have to remember those answers because they crop up again and again.
• Terry Wogan trundles along like he has done for years, with his tired “devilish” wit and witterings being received by lukewarm laughter from an easily pleased audience (who we never saw and may only have existed as a sound effect).
• Wogan’s boring banter with the four contestants: a Bruce Willis “lookalike”, an Essex girl who has skydived, a woman with an “amusing” holiday tale to tell and a man who rides horses.
• The inanity of many questions: eg “a clumsy person is a what in a china shop?”
• The chances of winning the top prize of £100,000 are nil. The opening show’s winner did pretty well yet only went home with £2,500 in winnings.
• Why is Channel 4 showing this tedium when it could have revived classics such as Watercolour Challenge and 15-to-1. The Weakest Link isn’t going to fear opposition like this.
